HDTV Buying Guide (Part 2)
So after reading Part 1, you're now hopefully a little more familiar with the HDTV technology options avaliable to you. Here are some other things to consider when shopping for a new HDTV.
Resolution
There are two times of video display modes: progressive and interlaced.
Progressive, represented as a p, means that each and every line on your TV is refreshed X number of times in one second, giving you the sharpest image possible.
Interlaced, represented by i, means that every other line on your TV is refreshed X number of times in one second, giving you slightly less sharp image.
As for the X, that's determined by FPS (frames per second). If your TV runs i at 60 fps, then every other line on your TV will be refreshed 60 times every second.
The resolution itself refers to how many pixels are on the screen at one time. If you buy a 1080 TV then there are 1,920 x 1 .....
HDTV Gaming without Next-Gen Consoles
So you want to enjoy high-definition gaming but aren't crazy about the idea of having to shell out big bucks for a next-gen console, like the PS3 or Xbox 360? Not a problem.
With the right cable and the right games, you can still enjoy HD gaming on your current console. And when you are ready for next-gen, rest assured the Xbox 360 and PS3 offer genuine hi-def video output for every game. While Nintendo’s Wii won’t offer HDTV resolutions, it will certainly offer widescreen for some games, including the launch title Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
To get widescreen from your Xbox, PS2 and the early model Game Cube, you’ll need an optional HD cable for playing in true HD. The cable plugs into the component video ports on the back of your set; they’re the red, green, and blue RCA-type jacks.
